Niveus Wildlife Workshop

Pupils from Wyke Primary School have been receiving tips on how to look after their local wildlife and environment during their summer holidays, thanks to David Wilson Homes.

A group of five pupils got the chance to visit the leading housebuilder’s new Niveus Walk development for a special Wildlife Workshop, hosted by one of David Wilson’s contractors, landscaper Jake Smith from JS Landscapes

The interactive session, designed towards protecting wildlife and promote the importance of sustainability, saw Jake explained how David Wilson Homes is building wildlife-friendly developments across the region and passed on handy tips.

The school children also had the chance to sow their own swiss chard seeds in pots so that they could take them home. And, each child was also given their very own branded goody bag, complete with gardening tools and energy saving booklets packed full of planet saving, nature-friendly tips.

Wyke Primary School’s Eco Lead and Year 4 teacher, Nicola Sheere, said it was a fantastic addition to the children’s learning, and a great way to teach them the importance of our impact on the environment.

Nicola said: “The workshop has been fantastic for the children. They were very engaged watching Jake talk about the importance of our local wildlife and were very excited to plant their own seeds and see them grow at home.

“We always try to communicate the advantages of looking after our planet, especially with climate change being such an important subject at present, and this workshops has been a great addition to the school’s curriculum. A huge thank you to David Wilson Homes and to Jake for such an interesting session.”

James Dunne, MD at David Wilson Homes’ Southampton division, said these interactive sessions give the housebuilder the perfect space to highlight its priorities over and above providing homes for local people.

He said: “We need to do all we can to protect the UK’s wildlife and David Wilson is committed to doing that in any way we can.

“We pride ourselves on offering homes to humans and animals, and have installed more than 140 metres of hedgehog highways, 120 bat boxes and almost an acre of bee-friendly planting.”

With the developer continually taking steps to reduce its impact on the environment, it also wants to share this ‘greener’ attitude with the next generation.

“We are thrilled to offer workshops like this one to local school children. It was lovely to see the pupils getting involved.”
